There is just so much crap that exists on Twitter, it’s almost like who do you follow and more importantly, who do you unfollow? I spent an entire day on Twitter, tweeting, following, unfollowing and doing lots of @mentions to people. Several people followed me back.
A few basic Twitterettique I made sure to follow consisted of the following:
1. I unfollowed anyone more than a year old. Heck, I even took my twitter account to the chopping block and unfollowed any one that wasn’t even active for more than three months. There was one person I made an exception to – this was @jackhumphrey just because this guy rocks…oh yea and @BambolaBambina (just because Caprica and anything Battlestar Galatica rocks). You will only get that statement if you are a SyFy nerd. I admit it. I’m not a closet freak anymore.
Back to my non-tangent blog post.
I looked at it this way: How do these dead accounts with 1 tweet and 1 follow from over two years ago add any value to anything? It doesn’t. Sometimes you need to clean house.
I realized that there is no way I’m going to stay connected to 1994 people. Just humanely in possible.
2. Thank you, thank you thank you. I made sure to say thank you with a @mention publicly to anyone that followed me.
3. Spy on the conversation. With Twitter, it’s okay to spy and eavesdrop on any conversation you can find in that handy search box. Otherwise people wouldn’t be talking about it in public.
And because I did that, I made several comments that got retweeted in one day. One of them got tweeted out to over 100,000 people because I was just in constant communication all day with this one guy. Fun stuff.
4. Well, now I’m going to list the 101 most useful people to follow today. Again like some of my other lists, these people are smart, intelligent, active yet witty and just ‘get this’ social media stuff. They create conversation, engage their audience and provide value? There. I summed up all the craziness of social media in one short succint sentence for you.

I lied. I like this tweet a lot too. Just because people think they creatively can type a witty tweet doesn’t mean they earn any cool points just for bashing people. @GFREEFUN – I support your message.
